A big week for books!

December8

It has been a busy week in the QC library! First of all, last week we raised over $1400 through the Scholastic book fair which meant we got to keep pretty much everything anyone wanted from the book fair! This picture shows some of the great titles that are currently being cataloged and added to our collection. They should hopefully be ready to check out at the end of the day Wednesday! There are lots of great graphic novels and fiction titles, the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, and some awesome sports non-fiction titles.

If the pile looks small to you, well…that’s the reality! Books cost money. This photo shows approximately $900 worth of books. Now you know why we’re always fundraising! It’s well worth it, though, to see our readers so excited.

Just for fun, we thought we’d show you an average day of check-outs and check-ins from our library. Our computer system was down on Monday which meant nothing could be returned/renewed, so those four bins you see? All books that were returned Monday.

All check-outs had to be done the old-fashioned way, with paper and pencil. See that yellow legal pad? Three pages (FRONT AND BACK!) of student names and book barcodes. It took over two hours to get it all entered into the system when the computer was working again.

Technology can certainly be annoying when it doesn’t work, but is super handy when it does!

Book Fair Success!

December1

Our annual book fair was a SMASHING success– as in, a record-breaking sales high!

As a result, we got to keep more than $900 worth of new books to add to our school library. They’ll be added to the collection in the weeks to come.

Thanks to everyone for their support! A special thanks goes out to the student volunteers who helped keep the fair running smoothly.

Coming soon- the BOOK FAIR!

November8

It’s everyone’s favourite time of year– the Scholastic Book Fair!

From Friday, November 19 until Monday, November 29 (two days longer than usual, to account for the fact that we have parent-teacher interviews on the 26th) the book fair will be set up in the foyer outside the library.

Click here to see some of the great books that will be available!

Unfortunately, parents cannot attend the in-person fair but can click here to shop our VIRTUAL FAIR! Books will be delivered directly to the school (no shipping cost!) and can either be sent home with the student OR, if it’s a surprise/gift, arrangements can be made for an alternative.

The book fair is our main source of fundraiser income for the school library, so we appreciate all the support.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our School Library Week activities. We had our highest numbers ever for our lunchtime activities which included trivia, bookmark making, and virtual escape rooms. Bookworm Trivia was won by the Toat Ipers with a respectable 16 out of a possible 25 points.

This just in!

October13

With the creation of the new Google site for the library, I haven’t been updating the blog as much but I just HAD to highlight these gorgeous new books that just arrived!

For French students, we received a bunch of new biographies and graphic novels; you’ll find books about Greta Thunberg, Malala Yousafszai, Carey Price, and Willie O’Ree as well as French adaptations of favourites like Courage (Guts by Raina Telgemeier) and the Wimpy Kid series.

In our new English collection, you’ll find:

  • the Enola Holmes series (check out the show on Netflix!)
  • the Keeper of the Lost Cities series by Shannon Messenger
  • Click, Act, and Camp (graphic novels by Kayla Miller)
  • more books in the Lumberjanes series
  • Sunny, Patina, and Lu by Jason Reynolds (sequels to Ghost, which is in the grade 8 classroom libraries)
  • books by Dean Hughes and Michael Grant that are recommended for fans of Alan Gratz
  • and much more!

Check out the First Page Friday link on the Google site for a video showing ALL the new titles!

Hope to see you soon!

Thank you to the Community Foundation of PEI!

October19

The Queen Charlotte library would like to extend a huge thank you to the Community Foundation of PEI and in particular, the Hesta MacDonald Legacy Fund, which provided a grant for the purchase of new library books.

With this funding, we were able to purchase:

  • 4 sequels to favourite books from our grade 7&8 classroom libraries
  • 3 books that had gone missing from our collection but were a part of a series (which was driving people nuts when they got to that book and we didn’t have it!)
  • 5 books that are new additions to current popular series
  • and a bunch of great new titles!

We are so grateful to have support from our community. Thank you!

Welcome back, Coyotes!

September4

Welcome back to our returning QC Coyotes and welcome to the new faces joining us! I have never been so excited to come back to school– I MISSED you all, and I missed the library too!

The blog will still be here for longer updates, but for quick things like requesting a book, searching the library catalog, or answers to commonly asked questions, visit our new Google Sites page at https://sites.google.com/cloud.edu.pe.ca/qclibrary/home (note: you’ll need to be logged in to your edu.pe.ca account).

The biggest change this year will be the book request form– it’s like getting pizza delivered to your door, except it’s a book instead! Fill in the form (there’s a link on the new webpage) and I’ll bring the book right to you!

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week, and talking about books!
